Buying a Home in Lewisville? Find Out Who Maintains Your Street

When a pothole opens on your street in Lewisville, or the first snow of the season falls, who you call depends on whose street it is. The town’s Street Maintenance page explains the split.

Some Lewisville roads belong to the state. The North Carolina Department of Transportation maintains all state roads in town, and the town’s page names the big ones: Shallowford, Lewisville-Clemmons, Williams, and Lewisville-Vienna. The state does not accept local streets inside an incorporated community for maintenance, so the publicly maintained residential streets are the town’s own responsibility. New streets must be built to state standards before the town accepts them.

Town street maintenance covers repairs, improvements, and snow and ice removal. The work is paid for in part with Powell Bill funds, Lewisville’s share of the state gasoline tax, which the town says is earmarked for street maintenance and related work and cannot be used for anything else. The rest comes from property taxes.

So how do you find out which list your street is on? The town publishes a Powell Bill map of the streets it maintains, and the Public Works office answers questions at 336-945-1020.

For a buyer, it is a quick check worth making before closing. Know who maintains the street out front, and you will know exactly where to report the first pothole.
