One of the best things about living in Clemmons, Lewisville or Advance is how close you are to wine country. The Yadkin Valley starts just west of us, and late fall is a great time to go: the leaves are turning, the harvest is in, and the tasting rooms are quieter than they are in summer.

Here's a simple guide to planning a fall wine day from our side of the county.

A little background

The Yadkin Valley became North Carolina's first federally designated American Viticultural Area (AVA) in 2003. Today it's home to dozens of wineries spread across the rolling farmland of Yadkin, Surry and nearby counties. Some are big estates with restaurants and event lawns. Others are small family farms where the person pouring your wine may also be the one who grew the grapes.

You don't need to be a wine expert to enjoy it. Most tasting rooms walk you through a flight and are happy to answer questions.

Six wineries worth knowing

These are spread out, so pick two or three for one day instead of trying to see them all.

Medaloni Cellars, Lewisville. The closest option for many of our clients, on Shallowford Road in Lewisville. It offers guided tastings at the bar and self-guided flights. If you live in Lewisville or Clemmons, this is an easy afternoon without a long drive.

Divine Llama Vineyards, East Bend. A vineyard, tasting room and working llama farm. Yes, real llamas. The tasting room lists year-round hours Thursday through Sunday, which makes it a good pick for a late-fall weekend.

Sanders Ridge Vineyard & Winery, Boonville. A longtime family farm with an on-site restaurant, so you can make lunch part of the trip. It's about a 25-minute drive west of Winston-Salem, by the winery's own description.

Hanover Park Vineyard, Yadkinville. Established in 1996, it's one of the older wineries in the valley. The tasting room is inside an 1897 farmhouse, and there's a patio for nice afternoons.

Raffaldini Vineyards, Ronda. Built to feel like the Italian countryside, in the Swan Creek area of the Yadkin Valley. The hilltop views are a big part of the draw, and it's a longer drive, so plan it as an anchor stop.

Shelton Vineyards, Dobson. One of the best-known estates in the region, in Surry County. It offers tastings, tours and reserve tasting experiences you can book ahead.

How to plan the day

Check hours before you go. Tasting room hours change by season, and many close by 5 or 6 p.m. Some are closed early in the week. A quick look at each winery's website the day before saves a wasted drive.

Group your stops by direction. Medaloni is right here in Lewisville. East Bend and Boonville sit to the north and west across the Yadkin River. Yadkinville is straight out US-421. Ronda and Dobson are farther out. Picking wineries that are near each other means more time tasting and less time driving.

Book anything special. Reserve tastings, tours and weekend restaurant tables can fill up, especially on nice fall Saturdays.

Plan your ride home. Pick a designated driver or book a ride. Country roads are dark early once the clocks change on November 1.

Bring a cooler. If you buy a few bottles, a cooler keeps them from sitting in a hot or cold car.

Eat something. A few wineries serve food; most have snacks at best. Pack a lunch or plan your route around a restaurant stop.

Living close to wine country

Being 20 or 30 minutes from vineyards is a real perk of the west side of Forsyth County and northern Davie County. Lewisville in particular sits right at the edge: you can be at a tasting room before you'd make it across Winston-Salem in traffic.

If you're thinking about a move and want room to breathe with wine country nearby, we're happy to show you what's for sale.

Winery details come from each winery's own website or listing as of October 2026. Hours and offerings change, so please check with each winery before you visit.
